The basic needs of any human being, as was demonstrated by Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs consists mainly of food, water, and shelter, as those elements that are impossible to live without. Food provides nutrition and energy, water gives sustenance and keeps one’s body functioning accordingly, while oxygenating blood, and shelter protects an individual from the elements of rain, harsh winds, storms, and hail, and wild animals, to name a few. When these needs are fulfilled it is accepted that that individual is capable of moving on to fulfil other needs supplementary to the initial three, and develop a healthy and comfortable life.
While food is generally consumed for sustenance, the countless choices and types of cuisine has emphasized on the fact that food, although a need, can be a highly enjoyable experience. In fact, entire cultures have grown around the celebratory nature surrounding food, and certain concepts of entertainment have been created entirely around food, such as dinner parties.
This diverse nature of food and the way in which it is able to bring people together, has resulted in a mass food culture. Food is no longer just consumed to eliminate hunger; it is a gastronomical experience that is savored and revered, with high-end restaurants having long waiting lists for patrons who wish to experience their food.
While earlier forms of food were basic and were mostly farm-grown, packed, and ready to eat, such as vegetables and fruit, modern methods have allowed for the creation of new kinds of food and entire kinds of food types with their own sub-groups. However, the mass production and distribution of ready-made packaged food did not develop until the invention of canning.
Canning became a popular ay in which to pack and sell foods that were previously not sold due to their high rate of perishability. Previously, preserving food consisted of salting (curing) of food, as well as pickling. The most ancient forms were where food was preserved in jars of honey or olive oil.
After the invention of the refrigerator, people were able to experience an array of new flavors and textures. Be it new forms of sugary sweets, crispy potato chips packed in vacuum-sealed bags, or ready-made ice-cream, the mass food production industry expanded with the help of machinery and equipment designed specifically for this purpose.
Food grade greases were developed to keep the machinery running in factory floors, where some machinery were used twenty-four hours a day.
Leading lubricant companies developed and supplied these greases, and this opened up an entirely new industry for these companies, due to the development of factory-made food.
It is clear that food has come a long way since the ancient peoples grew maize and corn for their sustenance. However, modern technology and machinery has made it clear that sky is the limit for the development of this industry.
